Lesson 3: Fire Triangle Flashcards
1
Q
Fire
A
- Chemical reaction taking place in an object
when enough elements are present. This
chemical reaction is called combustion.
Combustion happens when rapid oxidation or
loss of electrons makes the matter undergo some
chemical change
2
Q
Fire Triangle
A
According to this concept, fire is formed when
all of the needed elements are present, namely
the fuel, heat, and oxygen. If the two other
elements, the fuel and heat, are present, but there
is no oxygen present, a fire will not start.
3
Q
First element: Fuel
A
Materials that are easily combustible like paper,
wood, or gas
4
Q
Second element: Heat
A
- Possible source of sufficient heat
5
Q
Third element: Oxygen or Oxygen Gas
A
- Needed for the combustion reaction to happen
6
Q
Elements of Fire in Fire Tetrahedron
A
- Recent studies show that in order to form a fire,
the three elements of fire were not enough. That
is why they changed the fire triangle into a fire
tetrahedron.
7
Q
Chemical Reaction
A
- According to them, there should also be a
chemical chain reaction or continuous
combustion to form a fire, which is the fourth
element in the fire tetrahedron. The same thing
with the fire triangle; if one of these elements is
not present, a fire will not form.
