Lesson 3: Definitions of Abnormality - Statistical Infrequency Flashcards
1
Q
What is statistical infrequency?
A
Occurs when a person possesses a less common characteristic than most of the population. These behaviours are statistically rare. For example, having an IQ of over 130.
2
Q
Example of statistical infrequency - IQ
A
Approximately 68% of the population have an IQ of 85-115 within 15 points of 100, and 95% have an average score, within 30 points of 100.
However, less than 2% will fall into the range of 70 or below or 130 or above. These are statistically infrequent and may be a sign of abnormality
3
Q
Strengths of statistical infrequency
A
- Statistical infrequency may be a good thing, as while someone having an IQ score below 70 may need assistance, someone who has 130+ may be especially gifted
- It is a good indicator of whether someone needs psychological help and assistance.
4
Q
Weaknesses of statistical infrequency
A
- One disadvantage is the labelling of people as abnormal. This is not beneficial and may lead to further deterioration of their mental state and self-esteem issues.
- As well as this, there is a subjective cut off point between what is normal and abnormal. for example with IQ, if we say that someone with a IQ of 70 is abnormal but someone with an IQ of 71 is normal, this is subjective and this may be questioned.
