What is a function of carbohydrates?
Provides us with 50% of our daily energy intake.
Helps get rid of solid waste.
How much of our daily energy intake should come from carbohdyrates?

State three sources of carbohydrates.
Fruits, vegetables, milk, cereals, sweets, pasta, bread, cake, pastries, nuts, seeds, fizzy drinks, biscuits, rice, lentils, milkshakes etc…
State an effect of having an excess of carbohydrates in the diet.
Obesity (if we do not burn off enough energy). Damage to the pancreas. This reduces the amount of insulin in our bodies and can lead to type 2 diabetes. Tooth decay (from eating too many sugary foods).
State an effect of having a deficiency of carbohydrates in the diet.
Tiredness.
The body will become weaker as it will start to break down protein to obtain energy.

1 sugar molecule
How many sugar molecules are in a disaccharide?
2 sugar molecules
How many sugar molecules are in a complex carbohydrate?
3+ sugar molecules
State three foods high in sugar.
Cakes, sweets, chocolate biscuits, ripe fruits, vegetables honey etc…
State three foods high in starch.
Couscous, bread, pasta, rice, cereals etc…
State three foods high in dietary fibre.
Wholegrain foods (e.g. breakfast cereals, wholewheat pasta, wholegrain bread), fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, seeds and potato skins.
