LESSON 3: BIODIVERSITY Flashcards
refers to the variety of living organisms
Biodiversity
measure of the variety of versions of the same genes within individual species
Genetic diversity
number of different kinds of organisms within individual communities or ecosystem
Species diversity
richness and complexity of a biological community (niches, trophic levels, and ecological processes)
Ecological diversity
can only be found in a particular place
Endemic species
naturally existing organism in a particular area
Native species
introduced or foreign species that “steals” natural niches or disturbs the ecosystem
Invasive species
few numbers, almost near extinction
Endangered species
species that does not exist anymore
Extinct species
plays a critical role in a biological community that is out of proportion to its abundance
Keystone species
Areas with high biodiversity but are at greater risk of being destroyed due to natural and anthropological activities
Biodiversity hotspots
Most of these areas are near the equator
Biodiversity hotspots
Conversion of forests to farmlands and human settlement
Habitat Destruction
breakup of large areas of habitat into small, isolated segments
Habitat fragmentation
these are Alien, exotic, non-native, nonindigenous, pests, Janitor fish, water hyacinth, cane toads, mahogany
Invasive species
