Lesson 3 Flashcards
What does a strength do to a cliff?
Holds it together
Give an example of a stress
Angle of slope/ rainwater saturation/ vibrations e.g. Cars, people/ earthquakes/ sea(cliff erosion)
Give an example of a strength
Lubricant layers/ tree/ vegetation roots/ consolidation of material/ soil porosity allowing water through
What happens at a cliff face at the start of a wave cut platform?
A notch from erosion from the sea
What are the two types of slope movement?
Mass movement and water erosion
What is mass movement?
The downslope movement of slope material under the influence of gravity only.
What is slope movement from water erosion?
The downslope movement of slope material under the influence of gravity AND water.
How do you calculate the factor of safety?
Shear stress
What are blocks of hard/ soft rock seperated by?
Joints, bedding planes or faults.
How does the strength of the rock affect the speed of erosion?
Soft rock erodes easily whilst hard rock erodes slowly (it is resistant)
What is the typical shape of a cliff with different rock types?
Soft rock has a gently sloping cliff while hard rock has a steep cliff face.
What does a stress do to a cliff?
Causes collapse/ landslides
