instructions on worship

A

I urge, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people

for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godlinessand holiness.

This is good, and pleasesGod our Saviour, who wantsall peopleto be savedand to come to a knowledge of the truth.

For there is one Godand one mediatorbetween God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,

who gave himself as a ransomfor all people. This has now been witnessed toat the proper time.

Q

critical examination of Timothy - time periods and how it was written

A

-1 Timothy is a letter, written in response to some form of crisis in the Church at Ephesus,

-but we have only one side of the exchange of letters here, so scholars do not know what it was that the writer was replying to. It may have been a very specific local problem.

-Clearly, there was something wrong with the Church, and the writer is trying to prevent it from further harm.

Q

writer opposing women speaking in church

A

-First of all, the fact that the writer opposes women speaking in Church in Ephesus shows that this was already happening.

  • This perhaps explains verse 8, where the men are exhorted to ‘lift up holy hands without anger or disputing’.

-This suggests that the men had been arguing with the women and the women had been answering back, which threatened the habitual power exercised by men over women.
