When do you use the definite article - the?
- Rivers / oceans /seas
- Superlatives (the highest mountain)
- When there is only one of something (The sun)

- When we’ve mentioned something previously (This weekend my sister bought a kitten. The kitten is called Namo)
- Some countries (The United States of America)
- Mountain Ranges (The Alps)
When do you use the indefinite article - a/an?
- singular countable nouns (either mentioned for the first time or if it’s not important which one) (My sister has a boutique in town. The boutique is next to a florist’s.
- Jobs (He has worked as an architect for the last twelve years)

- Uncountable and abstract nouns (general) (We have no information about his current whereabouts)
- plural nouns (general, not specific) (cows eat grass)
