Lesson 2 What Is Underneath The Earth’s Surface? Flashcards
What is Pangaea?
Panji supercontinent that existed 250 million years ago . It contained all the landmass of all the continents we know today.
What is continental drift?
Over millions of years of continents, the least spread out to form the pattern we know today, there are still clues in the shape of the continents. For example, African South America fit together.
What are the three layers of the Earth?
Crust, which is made of solid rock mantle, which is made of molten rock, and the core which is made of metal.
What is the temperature of the crust?
Deep within the crust, the temperature reaches 200°C.
How thick is the earths crust?
It is 70 km thick
What is the temperature in the mantle?
The temperature in the mantle is 1000 to 3700°C.
How thick is the core?
It is over 3000 km in diameter.
What is the temperature of the core?
The temperature at the core is 4500 to 5200°C.
How far have we gone beneath the Earth surface?
We have gone 12 km underneath the surface due to high temperatures. It is called the Kola Superdeep Borehole.
