Lesson 2 - The Hazard Management Cycle Flashcards
Sheet 1
What are the 4 stages to the ‘Hazard Management Cycle’?
- Preparedness
- Response
- Recovery
- Mitigation
What happens during the ‘Preparedness’ phase in the ‘Hazard Management Cycle’?
Focus is on ensuring emergency services and people at risk know how to react during an event
What happens during the ‘Response’ phase in the ‘Hazard Management Cycle’?
Focus is on immediate needs of the population.
For example:
Protection of life and property including:
Firefighters, emergency medical services, evacuation and response, evacuation and transportation, decontamination, and the provision of food, water and shelter to victims
What happens during the ‘Recovery’ phase in the ‘Hazard Management Cycle’?
This phase is equivalent to long-term response.
This is where city authorities focus on cleanup and rebuilding.
Takes months→years
What happens during the ‘Mitigation’ phase in the ‘Hazard Management Cycle’?
Authorities look at the impact of the hazard.
Authorities focus on rebuilding in a way that reduces the impact of a future hazard, e.g. earthquake-proof buildings.
Recovery and mitigation occur at the same time.
What happens after the ‘Hazard Management Cycle’ is complete?
Emergency planners revisit the cycle and review + amend ‘Preparedness’ after a successful reponse to the recent hazard
