Lesson 2 - Skin Anatomy Flashcards
How much body weight does the skin represent.
15%
What does skin do?
Retains Moisture Regulates temperature Stores blood Host touch receptors Excretes excess salts
What are skin touch receptors for ?
Pain and heat
Skin has 3 layers, what are they?
Epidermis
Dermis
Subcutaneous tissue ( fat layer )
What are the cells in the epidermis called?
Keratinocytes
Where do keratinocytes originate from?
Basal layer
What happens when keratinocytes migrate up towards the surface of the skin?
They migrate up towards surface once they are there they shed and are replaced by new cells
Epidermis layer, are Stratum xxxx?
Corneum Lucidum Granulosum Spinosum Basalt
Tell me 3 things about stratum corneum…
Outer layer
Waterproof
If undamaged prevents bacterial/virus entering body
Tell me 2 things about stratum lucidum
Found in thick skin ( palms and soles )
Contains eleidin, a protein that turns into keratin as it migrates up
Tell me 3 things about stratum granulosum
3-5 layers of fat cells
Contains keratohyalin
Cells in this layer either dead or dying due to no nourishment from blood vessels
Tell me 2 things about stratum spinosum
10 layers containing prickle cells and langerhans
Langerhans migrate from skin to lymph nodes in infections
Tell me 4 things about stratum basale
Single layer generates cells found in epidermal layers
Rests on surface of dermis close to bloody supply
1/4 of this is melanocytes which secrete melanin into keratinocytes
Rest of cells keratinocytes
