Lesson 2 - Role of Climate in Biomes Flashcards
What 6 things influence a places climate? (LACLO)
These include:
1. Climate and biomes
2. Latitude
3. Altitude
4. Landforms
5. Ocean current
How does latitude affect a places climate? (3)
- The sun’s rays are more direct at the equator.
- With more energy focused on that region, it heats up more quickly.
- The closer to the poles you travel the cooler it
becomes
How does altitude affect a places climate? (2)
- Temperatures fall by around one degree C for every 100 metres increase in elevation.
- As you move from base to summit, variations occur in the landscape
How do landforms affect a places climate?
the location of mountain ranges affects the amount of precipitation that reaches inland
areas.
What is the role of ocean currents in biomes? (2)
- Cold ocean currents cool the air above, causing less evaporation and drier air.
- As this dry air moves over the warm land it heats up, making it less likely to release any moisture it holds
Why is soil important in biomes?
soil is important in determining which plants and animals inhabit a particular biome
The characteristics of soil are determined by:
● temperature
● Rainfall
● the rocks and minerals that make up the bedrock
What does endemic mean?
describes species that occur naturally in only one region
what does megadiverse mean?
having high levels of biodiversity
