LESSON 2: Properties of Water Flashcards
what is polarity
a molecule in which charges are unevenly distributed
Why does H20 happen?
-water is a partial negative and a partial negative
-oxygen wants to form an octet so it draws an electron from each of
the hydrogen atom
What is hydrogen bonding?
this type of bonding occurs because of the partial positive & negative poles of the water molecules
-only last milliseconds
-the slightly positive send attract the slightly negative ends
what is cohesion
force of attraction between molecules of the same kind
-cohesion causes water molecules to be drawn together and cause
water droplets to form on a smooth surface
-also causes surface tension
what is adhesion
force of attraction between objects that are different
-capillary action (blood at the doctors)
what is the specific heat of water
4184 J (this means that 4184 joules of energy are required to raise 1kg of water 1 degree C)
what is a mixture
a material composed of two or more elements or compounds that are mixed together but not chemically combined (mixing salt and pepper)
what is a solution
all of the components are evenly distributed throughout the solution
-dissolving salt in water to make salt water
what is solute
the substance that is dissolved in the solvent
what is a solvent
the substance in which the solute dissolves
what are suspensions
Mixtures of water and undissolved material
what is the pH scale
a measurement system that indicates the concentration of H+ ions and OH- ions
how do the pH levels work
pH > 7 would be basic or have bases (human blood, seawater, soap, ammonia solution, bleach, oven cleaner)
pH < 7 would be acidic or have acids (milk, normal rainfall, acid rain, lemon juice, stomach acid)
what is an acid
any compound that forms H+ ions in a solution
what is a base
a compound that produces hydroxide (OH-)
