Lesson 2 Plate Boundaries Flashcards
Sea floor spreading
formation of new area of oceanic crust which occurs through the upwelling of magma at midocean ridges and its subsequent outward movement on either side.
boundary
border between two tectonic plates
Plate boundaries
Convergent
Divergent
Transform
Convergent Boundary
also called destructive plate boundary
two plates are pushing towards each other
younger plates moves over on top of the older plate creating a trench
Subduction zones
regions where a portion of the tectonic plates are diving beneath Earth’s interior
Oceanic Oceanic convergence occur when
when two oceanic plates meet and one is pushed beneath the other
Oceanic continental convergence occurs when
oceanic plate pushes into and moves underneath a continental plate and the result is mountain ranges
Continental continental convergence occurs when
two continents meet head on and neither plate is moved underneath each other
tall mountain ranges occur
Divergent Boundary
zone where two lithospheric plates move apart from each other
also known as constructive boundary
produces long rift zones, normal faults, and basalticc volcanism
Divergent Boundaries are marked by
mid oceanic ridge
Transform Fault Boundary
zone between two plates that slide horizontally past each other
also so called conservative boundary
generally vertical and parallel to the movement
Triple junction
where three plate boundaries meet : ridge trench, or transform
