Lesson 2: Oxidation Flashcards
1
Q
What is oxidation?
A
Oxidation:
A chemical reaction where a substance reacts with oxygen.
2
Q
What is combustion?
A
Combustion:
The burning of a fuel with oxygen to release energy.
3
Q
What is the scientific name for rust?
A
Scientific name:
Iron oxide
4
Q
What are the products of methane + oxygen reacting?
A
Methane+ oxygen —> carbon dioxide+water
5
Q
What does magnesium+ oxygen produce?
A
- Magnesium oxide
- Give off a bright light that can be harmful to eyes.
6
Q
Why is there an apparent mass change in magnesium+ oxygen —> magnesium oxide?
A
- Oxygen is added
- The oxygen molecules aren’t measured at the reactants.
- In reality, mass is conserved.
7
Q
What is combustion?
A
Combustion is the burning of a fuel with oxygen to release energy.
8
Q
What is the equation for combustion?
A
Fuel+ oxygen —- >carbon dioxide + water
9
Q
How can you proove the prodcuts of combustion?
A
- Burn a fuel (bunsen burner.)
- The gass will travel through cold water to be condensed into water.
- When water is present, cobalt chloride paper will turn from blue to pink.
- Limewater will turn from clear to cloudy in the presence of carbon dioxide.
