Lesson 2 - Multi Store Model Flashcards
Who came up with the Multi-Store Model?
Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968)
What are the 3 components of the MSM?
1) Sensory register
2) Short term memory
3) Long Term Memory
What is the order of the MSM?
Environmental Input —> Sensory Memory
—> STM —> LTM
How does information travel from the sensory memory to the STM?
Paying attention
How does information travel from the STM to the LTM?
Rehearsal
How does information travel from the LTM to the STM?
Retrieval
How does information get lost from the STM?
If it is not rehearsed, it will be lost via decay or displacement?
What is elaborate rehearsal?
This is when the material is given some kind of meaning, to allow for better recall.
How does the sensory register work?
It stores sensory information from the environment for a short period of time.
There are 5 sensory stores:
Iconic Store (Visual)
Echoing Store (Auditory)
Haptic store (Touch)
Gustatory (Taste)
Olfactory Store (Smell)
What are the characteristics of the sensory register?
Duration: 250ms
Capacity: Unlimited
Coding: Depends on the sense
Who did research on the sensory register?
Sperling (1960)
What was the method of Sperling?
