Lesson 2 Mapping It Out Flashcards
Global projection
A spherical model of the earth. A globe.
Advantages for a global projection
The most accurate way to depict the entire earth
Direction, shape, distances, and area can all be accurately represented.
Disadvantages of a global projection
Can’t show great detail
Expensive to make
Bulky to carry
Hard to store
Cylindrical projection
Designed as if a cylinder were wrapped around the globe.
Advantages to cylindrical projections
Can be created on a flat piece of paper, convenient and inexpensive
Accurate for depicting small areas
Can depict the entire earth at once.
Disadvantage to cylindrical projections.
Distorts large areas
The areas near the poles apper larger then they really are. i.e South America and greenland
Pseudocylindrical projections
An oval projection of the entire world.
Advantages of pseudocylindrical projections
The scale is constant along any given latitude.
The sizes are less distorted then in some other projections
The entire earth can be depicted at once.
Disadvantages to pseudocylindrical projections.
No area of the map is completely free of distortion
Shapes are more distorted then on many other projections.
Conic Projections
Designed as if a cone were placed over the world
Advantages of conic projections.
Good for depicting areas with large east-west dimensions, like the U.S.
Accurate scale along a parallel line
Can depict the entire earth on one map
Disadvantage of conic projections
The scale is distorted North to South
Flat plane projections
A portion of the globe is shown on a flat projection so that if it were placed on a globe it would only touch the globe at one point
Advantages of flat screen projections.
The direction from a central point, such as the North Pole, is accurate.
Shows distance and areas accurately in relation to the central point
Accurate for use in navigation.
Disadvantages of flat plane projections
The direction and areas are only accurate in relationship to the central point.
It takes several flat projections to depict the entire earth.
