What is general deterrence?
The idea that if people see the punishments given to offenders that they will be less likely to commit crimes themselves. (Pros and cons)
What is specific deterrence?
When a specific person is punished harshly for their crimes to hopefully prevent them from repeating the crime.
What is incapacitation?
A sort of societal protection by taking offenders and placing them ina controlled environment where they (theoretically) are not able to harm society. (Death penalty)
What is the idea behind rehabilitation?
That something caused an individual to commit a crime and that by changing stimuli, the person can be rehabilitated in society. (education, employment, counseling, and wellness rehab.)
