Lesson 2: DNA And RNA Structures Flashcards
RNA
Ribonucleic acid, it is a nucleic acid used in protein synthesis
Three structural differences between RNA and DNA
- Sugar
- Nitrogenous Base
- Strand
Sugar
RNA nucleotides contain the sugar ribose instead of the deoxyribose
Nitrogenous Base
RNA nucleotides contain the base uracil (U), not thymine
Strand
RNA molecules are single stranded
Messenger RNA (mRNA)
A type of RNA that carries copies of sequences of DNA from the nucleus to the cytoplasm for protein synthesis
ribosomal RNA (rRNA)
A type of RNA, and works together with other proteins to form the structure of ribosome which coordinates the assembly of proteins.
Transfer RNA (tRNA)
RNA molecule that carries amino acids to the ribosomes where they can be used in protein synthesis
