Name the five different types of writing.
Descriptive, narrative, explanatory, instructive and argumentative writing.
What is a writing type?
The classification of a piece of writing by identifying its most striking characteristics.
What is descriptive writing?
Texts which attempt to describe a particular situation, person or object.
What is narrative writing?
A text that tells a story or expresses the creative thoughts of the writer.
What is explanatory writing?
When a writer explains or informs the reader of a concept, term or phenomenon’s meaning.
What is instructive writing?
A type of writing, simply written, wherein instructions are given to an individual in order that a particular objective may be met.
What is argumentative writing?
Presents a position which is defended through an argument with justified reasons for the stance.
What is a definition and what is it not?
A definition is not a premise. A definition is a clarification that aids understanding.
Name two aspects of a good definition.
Words doing the defining are clear and better understood than the word or phrase being defined.
Words being defined and defining phrase can be used interchangeably.
Name the four different types of definitions.
Stipulative, persuasive, lexical and enumerative definitions.
Explain what a stipulative definition is.
Using a new word in a different way.
What is a persuasive definition?
The arguer defines a term in an effort to persuade someone to agree with the arguer’s point of view regarding the thing being defined. Often includes emotional appeals.
What is a lexical definition?
A definition as it is known in natural language - the dictionary definition. There are no values embedded or persuasion involved.
What is an enumerative definition?
The use of examples to define. It tends to be incomplete and rely on a certain level of shared knowledge.
