Lesson 2: Cellular Respiration Flashcards
Why is it important to have vitamin B5 in your diet?
- CoA is the crucial add on to pyruvate as it is being oxidized and prepared for the Krebs cycle which is derived from Vitamin B5
- CoA bonds with acetic acid and forms a complex called acetyl-CoA
How efficient is aerobic cellular respiration compared to anaerobic cellular respiration?
Aerobic cellular respiration has an efficiency of 32% whereas anaerobic respiration has an efficiency of 2%
What is the difference between aerobic and anaerobic respiration?
Aerobic respiration takes place in the presence of oxygen, produces a large amount of energy. Carbon dioxide and water are produced as the waste products. Anaerobic respiration takes place without the use of oxygen, produces small amounts of energy.
How does the second law of thermodynamics affect the efficiency of cellular respiration?
Energy is disordered (entropy is always increasing) with every transformation of energy, so more energy is lost in the form of heat than is captured and stored in ATP from aerobic cellular respiration
Why does the krebs cycle have to occur twice for each glucose molecule undergoing cellular respiration?
Because glucose is split into two halves midway through glycolysis,it changes into two 3-carbon molecules instead of one 6-carbon entity. Thus, in order to keep track of the energy from one glucose molecule, you have to follow what is happening to each of the two pyruvate molecules that came out of glycolysis
