Lesson 2: Basic Networking Components Flashcards
is a device that enables a computer to talk with
other computer/network.
Network adapter
two types of network cards
wired and wireless
uses cables and connectors as a medium to transfer data
wired Network interface card
the connection is made using antenna
that employs radio wave technology.
wireless Network interface card
is a device that splits a network connection into multiple
computers. It is like a distribution center.
hub
Currently Hubs are becoming obsolete and replaced by more
advanced communication devices such as
switchs and routers
is a telecommunication device grouped as one of computer
network components. This is like a Hub but built in with advanced
features. It uses physical device addresses in each incoming messages
so that it can deliver the message to the right destination or port.
switch
are plug and play devices without the need of a complex setup.
UNMANAGED SWITCHES
is a device that can be configured and properly managed to offer a more tailored
experience to those who will be utilizing the box.
MANAGED SWITCHES
is one way of transmission media which can transmit
communication signals.
CABLES AND CONNECTORS
It is classified as Category 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5E, 6 and 7. Category 5E, 6 and 7 are high-speed cables that can transmit 1Gbps or more.
UTP CABLES AND STP CABLES
more resembles like TV installation cable. It is more expensive
than twisted-pair cable but provide high data transmission speed.
COAXIAL CABLE
It is a high-speed cable which transmits data using light beams through a glass
bound fibers.
FIBER-OPTIC CABLE
the other
device that used to connect a LAN with an internet connection is
called
router
is a wireless network device that acts as a portal
for devices to connect to a local area network. used for extending the wireless coverage of an existing network
and for increasing the number of users that can connect to it.
ACCESS POINT
is short for “Modulator-Demodulator.” It is a hardware component
that allows a computer or another device, such as a router or switch,
to connect to the Internet.
MODEM
The modem connects to your ISP, which typically provides either cable
or DSL Internet service.
CABLE MODEM
is a form of Internet access that uses the facilities of the public switched
telephone network (PSTN) to establish a connection to an Internet service provider (ISP)
by dialing a telephone number on a conventional telephone line.
