Lesson 2 Flashcards
1
Q
Type (I) Binary Ionic Compounds
A
composed of 2 different elements, contain a metal and non-metal
cation = named first and keeps its normal name
anion = named 2nd and add -ide to the end
2
Q
Type (II) Binary Ionic Compounds
A
multivalent metals form more than 1 cation
same as Type (I) but write which form it is in
[(I) (II) (III) (IV) (V) (VI)]
3
Q
Type (III) Binary Covalent Compounds
A
only contains non-metals
same as Type (I) but add a prefix according to the number of atoms present
(mono- is only used when the cation has a prefix as well)
4
Q
prefixes
A
mono- di- tri- tetra- penta- hexa- hepta- octa- nona- deca-
5
Q
polyatomic ions
A
ions composed of more than one atom that are held together through covalent bonds
