Lesson 2 Flashcards
CNS?
Consists of brain and the spinal cord
Nucleus ?
Contain genetic material of the cell
PNS
Has two divisions which include the somatic and autonomic nervous system
Nodes of Ranvier?
Gaps that are present along the myelin sheath
Motor Neuron
Neurones that can enable movement or action on muscles/ glands e.g. Running
Sympathetic Nervous Cells
A branch of the automatic nervous system is activated when someone is active or stressed
Schwann Cells
These cells make up the myelin sheath
Relay Neuron
They send messages between sensory and motor neurones
Dendrites
Branch like structures that protrude from the cell body. They carry nerve impulses from one Neuron to the next.
Brain stem
Part of the brain that controls breathing and heart rate
Somatic
The nervous system that transmits and receives messages from receptor cells in the sensory organs such as sight and hearing
Axon
Carries the electrical impulse away from the cell body towards the synapse
Synaptic
A small gap that exists between one Neuron and the next
Automatic Nervous System
The nervous system that is automatic and self regulating and controls breathing and heart rate
Parasympathetic Nervous System
The nervous that is responsible for making us feel relaxed e.g. Heart rate decreasing, digestion beginning.
