Describe the location of Salford

What is difference between quantitative and qualitative data
• Quantitative is numerical and can be statistically manipulated and graphed
• Qualitative is descriptive or visual with generally no structure
How have newspapers represented Salford Quays?
• Qualitative and quantitative
• Presented docks as competitive and difficult with 12-hour shifts of manual labour
• Decline during late 20th century losing 3000 jobs
• Good sense of community
How are newspapers useful?
• Some may have data which is factual, providing accurate info on the place but this is very 1D
• Some may also interviews providing quotes which allow more detailed interpretations to be made
• Newspapers can also be embellished in order to attract readers so can’t be totally reliable
How have photographs represented Salford Quays?
• Urban and densely packed
• Lots of manual labour (loading ships)
How are photographs useful?
• Visual so is accurate and reliable
• Images can be edited in the modern era
• Only a single , still snapshot in time so doesn’t account for change
How are poems and songs useful?
• May be an insider’s perspective so is more reliable
• Usually only one perspective so not representative of whole area
• Lyrics can be slightly exaggerated for entertainment
How are censuses useful?
• Mostly accurate information but not all people answer
• Objective
• Usually outdated
• Allows for graphing of change in population by using censuses from different decades
