What are network interface cards?
Network Interface Cards are a type of serial transmission device
What is serial transmission?
Serial means they can only transmit or receive one bit at a time
Where and What signals do Network interface cards usually produce?
Network Interface Cards produce signals usually in the form of voltage that are transmitted on the network media
Light and radio waves are the two other media options
How do serial devices function?
Serial devices function by looking at a series of signals representing an on or off condition
Term for data that comes out of Serial devices
binary data or bits
Different Network protocol systems (and what they use)
NetBeui - uses NetBios name (ex. MyWorkstation)
TCP/IP - Uses dotted decimal notation w/ mask (ex.192.1.1.2)
IPX/SPX - uses Hexadecimal (ex. 2a.224f.ff29.e13b)
Appletalk - uses decimal zone # and host # (ex. 100.24)
What protocol was the internet built around?
TCP/IP
TCP/IP breakdown (Who was it invented by, what does it use, what can it be used for?)
- Invented by US military and several universities (U. of Hawaii, U. of Stanford, U. of Utah)
- Uses dotted decimal notation (Has 32 bit address which is 4 bytes)
(Network Part uses a variable number of bits) (Host part uses a variable number of bits)
(Network and Host bits must add up to 32) - Can be used to share resources across a local network or across the world
Numbering systems used in Network engineering
Decimal, Binary, & Hexadecimal
Convert the number 101 to binary
1100101
Convert 100010 to decimal
34
Different kinds of 32-bit addresses used in TCP/IP
- IP Address
- Subnet Mask
- Default Gateway
- DNS Server Address
- Loopback Address
- DCHP Server Address
- Automatic Private IP Address
What is a mask
A mask is a network filter that tells you which part of the IP Address is the network part
Smallest ADDRESSABLE unit in a computer?
a byte
Smallest piece of data in a computer?
a bit
Binary numbers can be… (Signed or Unsigned Numbers segment)
signed or unsigned
Signed numbers can be (Signed or Unsigned segment)
positive, negative or zero
Unsigned numbers can be (Signed or Unsigned segment)
positive or zero
Unsigned byte can range from
0 to 255
Unsigned word can range from
0 to 65,535
Unsigned double-word can range from
0 to 4,294,297,295
Signed byte can range from
-128 to 127
Signed word can range from
-32,768 to 32,767
Signed double-word can range from
-2,147,483,648 to 2,147,483,647
