Lesson 2 Flashcards
Deals with composition, structure, and properties of matter
Chemistry
Anything that hasass and occupies space
Matter
State of Matter
Solid
Liquid
Gas
Their particles are close together, but cannot be compared and cannot move
Solid
Particles are close together but not held rigidly in position
Liquid
Far apart from each other and are arranged in a random way
Gas/Gases
Has no defined shape or Volume
Plasma
Water is liquid, when heated, the liquid state changes to gas
Evaporation
When vapor molecules slow down and gradually turn back into liquid
Condensation
When frozen, extremely slow and move very little. They hold onto each other, turning the water into ice, which is in the solid state
Freezing
Ice at room temperature turns the ice back into liquid state
Melting
By the addition of heat, solid is converted to gas
Sublimation
Occurs when gas is converted to solid
Deposition
Characteristics of a certain substance that sets it apart from other substances
Properties of matter
Property that becomes evident during a chemical reaction
Chemical Property
Property that can be measured or observed without changing the chemical composition of the substance
Physical Property
Cannot be used to help identify the a substance because it changes (Extrinsic Property)
Extensive property
