Lesson 2 Flashcards
Earth’s subsystems (ABGH)
Atmosphere
Biosphere
Geosphere
Hydrosphere
It extends from less than 1 m below the planet’s surface to
more than 10,000 km above the planet’s surface.
Atmosphere
protects the organisms of the biosphere from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. It also absorbs and emits heat.
upper portion of the atmosphere
When air temperature in this portion of the atmosphere changes, weather occurs.
lower portion
constitutes the climate system that maintains the conditions suitable for life on the planet’s surface.
Troposphere (0-10km)
Temperature Condition in TROPOSPHERE as altitude rises
Colder
contains ozone that protects life on the planet by filtering harmful
ultraviolet radiation from the Sun.
Stratosphere (10-50km)
Temperature Condition in STRATOSPHERE as altitude rises
Hotter because ozone traps heat
Temperature Condition in MESOSPHERE as altitude rises
The coldest region
meteors usually burn up in this region as they approach our planet.
Mesosphere (extends 80km high)
aurora and satellites are located here.
Thermosphere (extends up to 600 km)
the upper limit of the atmosphere extends from the top of the thermosphere up to 10,000 km.
Exosphere
3 types of system
Isolated
Closed
Open
matter and energy cannot pass in this system
Isolated
only energy can enter in this system
Closed
