Explain Bernoulli’s Principle in relation to a wing

A

The curved surface of a wing causes the air on top of the wing to move faster than the bottom; this leads to lower pressure on the top of the wing and higher pressure under the wing, causing the wing to press upwards which is lift.

Q

What are ways to increase the lift on a wing?

A
  1. Increase airspeed, which increases the speed of the wind going over the wing.
  2. Change the shape of the wing - i.e. lower Flaps
  3. Increase the Angle of Attack - i.e. pitch up

Q

What is the lift equation?

A

L= 1/2 pvvSCl

where:
p is the air density,
v is the velocity of the air relative to the wing (airspeed),
S is the wing area,
Cl is the coefficient of lift, which is a dimensionless number depending on the wing shape and angle of attack.

or 1/2 * air density * velocity squared * wing area * (wing shape + AoA)

Q

How does Newton’s Third Law affect a wing?

A

When the wing increases it’s angle of attack (to a certain point), more relative wind hits the underside of the wing, pushing it up (and back)
