It refers to an individual’s pattern of reaction or behavior towards himself, his environment, his associates, and the situations he may find himself.
Interest
Interest develops from early childhood and progress onward as a result of…?
Experience
It is a motivating force that stimulates the individual to participate in one activity rather than in another.
Interest
It is the desire for what is called or considered necessities.
Needs (a strong motivations that have to be met)
The child’s need for … or economic security comes first and begins with the parents’ arms. It extends to what gives him comfort and well-being. The old fairy tales were told by people who didn’t have enough to eat or keep themselves comfortable so their stories were full of brightly burning fires and the table filled with plenty of food.
Need for Material Security
It is a higher kind of security than material security. It has inner spiritual quality made of love which every child should have and build into his ideals of family life. Stories like Louisa May Alcott’s “Little Women” fill this kind of need.
Need for Emotional Security
Every child needs to know accurately and surely. Children have wild curiosity and keen intelligence that must be filled in by parents and teachers. Illustrated picture books especially about applied sciences like planets and other things in the solar system could fill this kind of need. Children’s encyclopedias and dictionaries are also great options.
Need for Intellectual Security
It enables an individual to surmount dangers. It is the result of a strong religious belief and a belief in God. Spiritual books that do not mention specific religious groups or practices are good in filling in this need. Life stories of saints and old fairy tales with decent and good messages are also good choices.
Need for Spiritual Security
Growing out from the need for security is the need to … and be accepted by a group. Family stories will help children feel such security. It is also important to give children books about other lands, races, and creeds that are honestly presented.
Need to Belong
It is in his family that a child first learns and feels his first lessons of love and affectionate relationships. When family relationships are normal and happy, the child grows up to have healthy attitudes. Stories that feature the importance of families and animals defending or protecting their young are appealing for this kind of need. Fairy tales stories with princes and princesses will help girls think of themselves as princesses and little boys as princes.
Need to Love and Be Loved
Not only adults but also children need to have a strong desire to achieve. Autobiographies and biographies of historical and successful people would appeal to this need. Stories of adventure, mystery, and career will also do. Such books will help the child’s need for achievement and stir him to emulation.
Need to Achieve, to Do, or be Someone Worthy of Respect
One of the needs of humans is to rest or play. Children are not exempt. Children also need freedom from pressures from school. Sensational comic books may provide children with temporary release from their problems. Children need literature that will take them away from the fears of the modern world. Books with many heroes and heroines can inspire children to accomplish difficult tasks and persevere. Many modern fairy tales provide material for laughter and imaginative adventures that dissolve fear and tension.
Need for Recreation or Change
The need to adorn, be beautiful, and enjoy beauty are part of human needs. Man seeks … in one form or another at various degrees of taste. The development of a child’s aesthetic taste depends on the material he is presented with. Good literature can satisfy this basic need of children.
Need for Aesthetic Satisfaction
Except for the period of early infancy, early adolescents need lots of opportunities to exercise their growing bodies and explore their emerging large and small muscle capacities. They need ample quantities of nutritious food to support their physical growth and increased activity levels. They need opportunities to learn new physical skills and learn how to keep their bodies safe and healthy as they grow. They need opportunities to challenge their growing physical capacities and test their limits with support and help from caring adults in a safe, secure environment. They also need opportunities to pace themselves by balancing periods of physical activity with needed rest and relaxation.
The need for physical activity
It is common for young adolescents to feel self-conscious and unsure of their abilities during this period of rapid growth. As they encounter more and more opportunities to connect with the real world, they need matching opportunities to demonstrate to themselves and to others that they can do things well. They need opportunities to learn and develop new skills and understandings related to all areas of life. Being acknowledged for their accomplishments encourages them to build on these accomplishments. Related to the need for competence and achievement is learning to set realistic goals which are likely to lead to success and learning to deal with setbacks and disappointments effectively when they do occur.
