Q

Mesocompounds

A

These are optically inactive molecules as they cannot rotate a plane of light. These compounds have an internal plane of symmetry that divides the compound in half, which are mirror images of each other.
-As a result, even though they may have chiral centres, the presence of an internal plane of symmetry leads to a cancelation of the optical activity making compounds optically inactive

Q

Why are mesocompounds important

A

They provide an exception to the rule of all chiral molecules are optically active and so understanding them is crucial for accurately predicting and interpreting the systems of chemistry
