Lesson 2 Flashcards
proton
One of the principal particles of an atom. The proton has a positive electric charge and is found in the nucleus of an atom. A proton weighs on atomic mass unit, which is about 1.66 x 10 to the power of -27 kg.
neutrons
One of the principal particles in an atom. The neutron has no electric charge and is found in the nucleus of an atom. The mass of a neutron is about one atomic mass unit or 1.67492711 x 10 to the power of -27 kg.
nucleus
The central core of an atom. The nucleus is made of protons and neutrons. The electrons circle around the nucleus.
electron
The smallest significant particle in an atom. Electrons have a negative electric charge and orbit around the nucleus.
ion
A variation of an atom or atoms based on the loss or gain of an electron. This changes the charge of the atom.
cations
An atom that has lost an electron. Cations have more protons than electrons, giving them a positive charge.
anions
An atom that has gained an electron. Anions have more electrons than protons, giving them a negative change.
