Lesson 2 Flashcards
Epicenter
The part of earths surface directly above where an earthquake began
Foreshock
A tremor preceding a larger earthquake
Intensity
The effect of an earthquake on earth’s surfaces humans and structures
Magnitude
A measure of the maximum motion or energy released by an earthquake
Moment magnitude scale
A scale that rates earthquakes by measuring the total amount of energy released plate
Modified Mercalli scale
A scale that describes the effects of an earthquake based on observations of shaking and damage
P waves
Waves that push or pool particles in the direction that the wave is traveling
Richter scale
A scale that measures the magnitude of earthquakes and measuring the amplitude of waves on a seismograph
Ring of fire
Geographic location where a lot of earthquakes and volcanic activity occurs
Seismic waves
Waves that are generated by an earthquake or explosion
Seismograph
A record produced by seismograph of seismic activity
Seismology
The branch of science that studies earthquake and other causes of seismic waves
Surface waves
Waves of travel along the surface of earth
S waves
Waves that shake particles are right angles to the direction where the wave is traveling
Tectonics
The theory that earths plates are in slow cost emotion
