What is the difference between a search engine and an internet browser?
Internet browsers are tools used to connect to the internet from a device. Search engines are tools within the browser to find information stored on the internet
What search engines do browsers prefer?
Google Chrome prefers Google. Internet Explorer prefers Bing. Microsoft Edge prefers Bing. Safari prefers Google.
What are common search engines and academic search engines
Common: Google, Bing, Yahoo Academic: Refseek, Seek Education, VirtualLRC.com
What is a metasearch engine?
A search engine used to search several search engines at once such as Duckduckgo.com, Search.com, Dogpile.com
What are the 5 different ways search engines perform similar tasks?
Crawl, Index, Match, Locate, Display
Define crawl
automated spiders systematically browse websites and build lists of keywords
What is a bibliography?
An alphabetical list of sources used for a research project
What is research database?
Provides organized information about related subjects
What is Boolean logic?
Uses the operators and, or, and not to get more exact search results
What is a keyword search?
Uses specific terms to search databases
What is plain language search?
The most common way to search any website or search engine; consists of a simple word, phrase, or question
What is a biased source?
Prejudiced in favor of or against one thing, person or group usually in a way that’s considered unfair
What is a reliable source?
A source that’s consistently good in quality and can be trusted
What is worldcat and what is it used for?
An international database of libraries and their catalogs that have registered with worldcat
Which symbols are used in a truncation search?
?*$!#
What are “wildcards” and why would you use them?
?!$# but they only replace ONE LETTER of a word. Still used in words that are spelled different but mean the same thing.
Why would plus (+) and minus (-) be used in an internet search?
\+ = Searches for both words on either side of the mark and not just the two words combined but also separately to widen the search - = the word following the mark is to be excluded from the search
What are databases and what are they used for?
They search only information contained within the database
What is Boolean logic and which words are used in Boolean searches?
Uses operators such as and, or, and not to provide a more specific search
Why should you have a library card?
You can access online databases, place holds on materials, provide the library with purchasing suggestions for future materials, you can request resources via interlibrary login
What is Power Search and what kind of searches can it perform?
A tool that searches access all of the library’s subscription Gale databases to access it.
