Lesson 17 Flashcards
From a Darwinian perspective, why is it important that organisms demonstrate generalization?
If behavior only occurs to the SD, then survival is less likely.
What is the shape of the generalization gradient?
Normal curve.
An important goal of clinical/applied psychology is to teach new behaviors and ensure that these behaviors generalize. What three techniques are used to promote generalization?
Train and hope, generalization training, and the similar stimulus method.
Train and hope
Trains a desired behavior and hope it generalized to everyday situations.
Generalization training:
Train generalization until is is naturally occurring.
The similar stimuli method:
Involves trying to maximize the similarity between the training situation and everyday situation.
What was the significance of the milgram studies in the discussion of generalization?
The more the researcher looked like an authority figure, the more responses he would get.
What is generalization?
1) behavior is evoked by an SD
2) novel stimuli that resemble the SD increase the probability of the behavior even though the behavior has never been reinforced in the presence of these stimuli.
