post event discussion is a convo between co-witnesses or a police interview after a crime. info presented to a witness between the crime and recall may confabulate the memory with their schema based on previous knowledge, expectations, motivations and interpretations
Loftus came up with ‘misinformation acceptance’ where people accept misleading information after an event and include it in their memory especially if the original event was unfamiliar

Para 1

A

P: research to support the misleading information and links with confabulation comes from Loftus and Palmer.
E: found that changing intensity of a verb in a post event discussion of ‘How fast were the cars going when they —-? changed expectation of speed.
pps were then asked if they saw the broken glass and 16/20 of smashed did compare to 7/20 for the hit. this shows misinformation effect on memory
P: HOWEVER
E: Loftus and palmer lack eco validity cus watching clips of car accidents is different emotional response
E: yerke Dodson inverted u model suggests that there is a point where high stress levels cause the working memory to become less effective and so EWT declines

P: Yuille and Cutshall interviewed 13 witnesses to an armed robbery (high stress) in canada using misleading questions in the post event discussion
E: depsite the leading questions about the ‘yellow panel’ when it was actually blue, pps could still give accurate recalls of the event 4-5 months later
E: this suggests misleading information is less impactful in meaningful and stressful events.
HOWEVER this could be due to post event discussions between witnesses during the 4-5 month period to reinforce the details (situational variables)

P: Gabbert et al set up controlled lab experiment
E: pair of participants watch video (dif angles and versions) and then either encouraged to discuss event before recall or not allowed to discuss with pair. 71% of witness who discussed made mistakes in recall whereas 0% of control made mistakes in recall
E: this supports the cause and effect of misinformation in post event discussions
