An idiom is an expression or phrase that must be considered as a whole-you cannot derive the meaning of an idiom by determine the meaning of each word separately. Idioms are a form of no literal expression.

A short pithy saying that expresses a basic truth or basic precept.
- What does the literal context refer to?
The literal context refers to the literary passage in which a verse or phrase appears.
- How should you determine the meaning of a word?
By its use in the original language of scripture at that time.
- Word definitions are important, but what is necessary to reveal the proper meaning?
Only the immediate context will reveal the proper meaning.
- Major doctrinal issues cannot be decided by what?
major doctrinal issues usually cannot be decide just by looking at the grammar. Or meaning of a word from one verse.
- Ultimately, what is the context for interpreting and individual passage?
If your interpretation violates or contradicts what scripture says in other places, your interpretation is wrong
