These passage from letter to James 5:14-15 highlights 2 important events, what are those events?
1.Calling for elders – the sick individual is instructed to call a help from a priest for healing and support within the Church.
2.Prayer and Anointing – the priest or elders of the Church are task to pray over the sick person and anoint them with oil. This act of anointing symbolizes both care for the sick and a request for divine intervention.
3 effects of anointing of the sick
SHARING IN CHRIST’S PASSION
It unites the sick person with the passion of Jesus, giving a redeeming purpose to his pains. As St. Paul explained, “I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of his body, which is the Church.”
FORGIVENESS OF SINS
It forgives all sins, but only if the patient is unconscious or physically unable to receive the Sacrament of Penance. As St. James declared: “The prayer of faith will save the sick man and the Lord will raise him up again; and if he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven.”
HEALING OR PREPARATION FOR HOLY DEATH
If it is in God’s plan, the Anointing will help the patient recover his health, otherwise, it will dispose him for Christian death. As St. John revealed: “Blessed are those who die in the Lord, let them find rest from their labors, for their works will accompany them”
