LESSON 1.1 Flashcards
Transport nutrients
Circulatory System
Muscular pumping organ
Heart
Circulating Medium
Blood
Closed system; the arteries, veins, and capillaries
Blood Vessels
Organ that pumps blood to different parts of the body
Heart
Heart chambers are partitioned by a muscular muscle called
Septum
Receiving chambers of the heart
Atria
Receives oxygen-poor blood coming from all parts of the body
Right atrium
Receives oxygen-rich blood coming from the lungs
Left atrium
Pumping chambers of the heart
Ventricles
Pumps blood to the lungs for oxygenation
Right ventricle
Pumps oxygenated-rich blood to all parts of the body
Left ventricle
Connected to the heart
Blood vessels
Largest vein, it sends oxygen-poor blood back to the heart
Vena cava
It drains blood from the head and neck region to right atrium
Superior Vena Cava
Drains blood from the lower parts of the body to the right atrium
Inferior Vena Cava
Sends blood from the right ventricle to the lungs for oxygenation
Pulmonary artery
Send oxygen–rich blood from the lungs to the left atrium
Pulmonary veins
It is the largest artery, it sends oxygen-rich blood from the left atrium to all parts of the body
Aorta
It is the branch of aorta that supplies blood to the heart
Coronary Arteries
Flap of tough muscles in the circulatory system prevents blood to different parts of the body
Valve
It is between the atria and the ventricle
Atriventricular (AV) or cuspid valves
Between the right atrium and right ventricle
Tricuspid valves
Between the left atrium and left ventricle
Bicuspid/Mitral valves
It is within the openings of the vena cava
Semilunar (SL) Valves
Within the opening of the pulmonary artery
Pulmonic valves
Within the opening of the aorta
Aortic valves
Thick-walled to cope with the high pressure of the blood flowing through them
Arteries
It have thinner walls than arteries. This is because they easily collapse when cut
Veins
These are the smallest blood vessels that are one-cell thick
Capillaries
