How do birds adapt to extreme weather of food shortages?
hibernation state called torpor, puff up their plumage and tuck their heads into their feathers, put on fat, or reduce the blood flowing to their feet
How does torpor work?
body temperature drops, which slows down heart rate, breathing, and metabolic rate
Which birds go into a state of torpor?
Swifts and hummingbirds during migration; poor wills are the only birds that go into an extended state of torpor.
How do birds stay cool?
pant, seek shade, bathe, or move less
What are the three main ways in which birds communicate?
song, call, or non-vocal communication
How do songs differ from calls
songs: longer and more melodic and complex; calls: heard year round, short and simple
What are the two types of vision? Describe the benefits and drawbacks of each type
Monocular vision= birds that have eyes o either side of their head; large field of vision but poor depth perception; they can use each eye for different tasks Binocular vision- birds that have both eyes at the from of head; gives them smaller field of vision but greater depth perception
What kind of birds need dense auricular feathers?
Aquatic birds to protect their ears form water.
