Lesson 10: part 1 Flashcards
What are the two broad categories of data collection?
Primary and Secondary Data Collection
Primary Data Collection
generation of new data
Secondary Data Collection
use of existing data
What is data collection driven by?
purpose of the evaluation
What does double barreled mean?
asking two things in one sentence
What is step one of instrument design framework?
Purpose
What does step one answer?
reasons for doing the survey (why), the use of the findings (for what), id proper audiences (for who)
What is step 2 of design framework?
test specifications
What does step 2 include?
question format, issues of fairness, issues of bias
What are some stengths of a self completed questionnaire?
convienent, low cost, large sample, unusable data is typically low
What are some weaknesses in using a self completed questionnaire?
potential for interiviewer bias, role selection, self reported data, act of taking a measurement may affect the behavior being measured
Strengths of a self completed mail survey?
inexpensive and Can poll from areas as large as a city, a state, or even a country.
Weaknesses of a self completed mail survey?
selection bias, low response rate
What is step 3 of instrument design framework?
pool of items
What types of variables can be measured by a survey?
demographic, cognitive, psychosocial, environmental and health
What must you focus on when developing your own survey?
WWFP
- What to ask about
- Wording questions
- Formatting surveys
- Pretesting surveys
In the FIRST principle on ‘what to ask about’ in developing your own survey, what must you ask about? What must you avoid?
- Ask about people’s firsthand experiences (what they have done, feelings/perceptions)
- Avoid using hypothetical questions
- Avoid asking about causality
(Why? What caused?)
What is the THIRD principle to be considered when developing your own survey?
(concerned with wording)
A survey question should be worded so that every respondent is answering the same question.
Principle 3:
- In regards to asking about feelings and behaviors, what must be a part of the wording?
- Questions about FEELINGS and BEHAVIORS must refer to a period of TIME that is CLEAR.
What is the FOURTH principle to be considered when developing your own survey?
(concerned with wording)
If DEFINITION are to be given, they should be given BEFORE the questions itself is asked.
