LESSON 10 : ETC (Electron Transport Chain) Flashcards
is used to drive the oxidation processes that lead to the phosphorylation of ADP to ATP
NADH and FADH2
ETC occurs in the
inner membrane of the mitochondria
ETC: Complex 1
• NADH enters here
• NADH is oxidized to NAD+
• NADH releases 2 e-
• hydrogen ions are pumped into the intermembrane space (IMS)
• Ubiquinone (Coenzyme Q, Q)accepts the 2 e- and is reduced to CoQH2 (QH2)
ETC: Complex 2
• FADH2 enters here
• FADH2 is oxidized to FAD
• FADH2 releases 2 e-
• Not enough energy is generated to pump H+ another
• Ubiquinone accepts the 2 e- and is reduced to CoQH2 (QH2)
ETC: Complex 3
• Delivery of electrons from CoQH2 to Cytochrome C (Cyt C)
• The oxidation of each CoQH2 causes more H+ to be pumped from matrix to the IMS
ETC: Complex 4
• Cyt c gets oxidized and the electron pair are transferred to an oxygen molecule
• The now negatively charged oxygen molecules attract two H+ to create water.
• The oxidation of Cyt c causes more H+ to pumped to the IMS
The release of energy causes H+ to be pumped from
the matrix to the intermembrane space
