Lesson 1 - Types of Conformity Flashcards
What is conformity?
Conformity is a form of social influence that results from exposure to the majority position, and leads to compliance within someone else.
It is a change in a person’s behaviour or opinions as a result of real or imagined pressure from a person or group of people.
What are Kelman’s 3 types of conformity?
Compliance
Internalisation
Identification
What is compliance?
Compliance is a type of conformity, where individuals change their behaviour and views, to align with the majority. Nothing changes privately.
What is internalisation?
Internalisation is when an individual changes their behaviour and views to reflect that of the majority. This is when the individual decides that the majority is correct. It is a more permanent form of conformity.
What is identification?
This is when someone conforms to a group because they value the group. They want to be included in the group, so they comply rather than disagree. They also identify with those people who we admire, and look up to.
