Parliament
the supreme law making body comprised of elected officials and representatives
Government
The party with the majority seats in the lower house, or House of Reps., that has the ruling authority/power to govern
Opposition
The party with the second most seats in the House of Reps that holds government accountable by questioning policies
Crossbenchers
Members of parliament who are not apart of government or the opposition (independents or from minor parties.)
Statute
A law made by parliament that has passed through the lower and upper houses and received royal assent
Royal assent
Formal approval of a bill given by the governor General, allowing it to become an Act of Parliament
Jurisdiction
The power of a court/tribunal or other dispute resolution body to decide legal cases
Common law
Law made by judges via rulings on cases.
Precedent
A legal principle established in the ruling of a case that should be followed by other courts in cases of similar material fact. Can be binding or persuasive.
