Sentient
The ability to have a capacity to experience feelings and degree of awareness.
Sentient-being
If negative or bad feeling that is prolonged or in a long period of time.
Suffering
Using “human based” assessment to meet the animal’s need.
Anthropomorphism
It concerns the quality of animal’s life.
Welfare
Not included in welfare, but possible result of suffering, and mortality rate.
Death
Relationship of mortality rate and welfare quality?
Indirectly proportional:
High mortality rate = poor animal welfare
low mortality rate = high animal welfare
What are the three approaches for animal welfare?
Physical, Mental, and Natural aspects
An approach of animal welfare where it concerns about coping to the environment, and physiological system must not be disturbed.
Physical animal welfare
An approach of animal welfare where it concerns about how the animal’s feel.
Positive: Animal stays to meet its goal.
Negative: Animal immediately runs away from harm.
Mental animal welfare
An approach of animal welfare where it concerns about normal behavior of an animal. The degree of suffering increases when it does not express its natural behavior.
Natural aspect animal welfare
Enumerate the five freedoms of animal welfare:
Freedom from hunger and thirst
Freedom from discomfort
Freedom from pain, injury, and disease
Freedom to express normal behaviors
Freedom from fear and distress
