Lesson 1 - Intro to Watershed Management Flashcards
What is a watershed?
Watersheds (originating from the German word for “water parting”) are regions or areas with natural hydrologic boundaries draining to a particular watercourse or water body
- Area where the runoff converges to a single point
What is watershed mangement?
Is basically the flow of water (imagine how water flows)
What is the anthropogenic meaning?
relating to, or resulting from the influence of human beings on nature anthropogenic pollutants.
-Human caused
Sub basin
- Smaller Watershed ex. okanagan basin is part of the columbia basin (big basin)
What is included in a watersheed
the surface ground water, soils, vegetation and animals in a drainage basing, as well as humans and their anthropogenic impacts.
How are watersheds delineated?
On a map, watershed boundaries can be roughly delineated by connecting the highest elevation points (i.e. divide between watersheds) to the common point of concentration (PoC) or interest.
Watersheds are a fundemental to what parts of the eco system
- physical
- chemical
- biological/Ecological
There are two themes common to most definitions of ecosystem management:
(1) management should maintain or improve ecosystems; and
(2) ecosystems should provide a range of goods and services to current and future generations.

- biological/Ecological
What is watershed management
Watershed management is the process of managing human activities within an area defined by topographic boundaries to conserve, maintain or improve water resources and associated values.
What is hydrology?
= the study or knowledge of water
“The science that deals with the waters of the earth, their occurrence, circulation and distribution, their chemical and physical properties and their reaction with the environment including their relationship to living things.”
What are some watershed management categories
- Groundwater
- Flood control and forecasting
- Pollution and water quality
- Water allocation
Operational Hydrology Definition
“the study of the occurrence and movement of water from the time it falls on the surface of the earth until it runs off to the ocean and is evaporated back into the atmosphere”
