Lesson 1 - Intro To Metallurgy Flashcards
What are two physical properties that can be commonly assigned to metals?
Relatively high thermal and electrical conductivities.
Due to fact metal atoms are held together by sharing electrons via metallic bond to form crystals where electrons are allowed to move freely.
What is an Element
Substance made from one form of atom (cannot be separated by
chemical means into simpler substances)
What is a compound?
Substance made from two or more bonded elements
What is a Crystalline structure?
Ordered 3D arrangement of atoms (could also be ions or molecules) which can be represented by a unit cell (e.g. bcc, fcc etc.)
What is a Dislocation?
A kind of defect or irregularity within a crystal structure, which is the source of plastic deformation
What is a Grain/Grain Boundary?
A region of material with the same crystalline structure
in which all atoms are arranged with one particular orientation and pattern
What is a Phase?
A region of material that has uniform physical and chemical properties
What is a Solid Solution?
Homogenous mixture of two different kinds (solvent & solute) of compounds/atoms in solid state and having a single crystalline structure
What is a Phase Diagram?
Graphical representation of all the equilibrium phases as a function of temperature, pressure and composition
What are the two types of solid solution?
• Substitutional (ordered or disordered)
• Interstitial
