Lesson 1 - Intro to Gospel Criticism Flashcards

1
Q

How can Gospel critics offer important insights into Gospel studies?

A
  1. ) Not everything they say is wrong or bad
  2. ) They raise important questions that we need to grapple with (synoptic problem, form critics with pericopes) – the observations they make can be helpful and accurate, although we wouldn’t agree with what they do with that info
  3. ) It’s important to not only listen to those you agree with

Q

How does understanding Gospel criticism help pastors better minister to people in their churches?

A
  1. ) We need to learn not just how to teach the gospels, but how to defend and uphold the gospels as trustworthy. (Explain to our congregations why the gospels can be trusted)
  2. ) The people you are ministering to will have access to the outside world, where everyone has critiques about the gospels. (They are going to ask you, what do you think about? the critiques from Time Magazine or Newsweek)
  3. ) You also need it to do effective evangelism, with people who don’t trust the Bible? Most objections are focused on the person of Jesus and the gospels
