Lesson 1: Enzymes Structure and Function Flashcards
What are Enzymes?
Globular Protiens that catalyse complex metabolic pathways
What is Hydrolysis?
Any chemical reaction in which a molecule of water ruptures one or more chemical bonds
What are Enzymes Function?
Biological Catalysts that are specific to certain substrates
What is the Stricture of Enzymes?
Polymers of Amino Acids
What is it called when an enzyme binds with a substrate molecule?
Enzyme-Substrate Complex
What is the Lock and Key Hypothesis?
States that part of a substrate fits exactly into the active site of an enzyme
What is the Induced Fit Hypothesis?
The active site on an enzyme makes contact with the proper substrate in which the enzyme moulds itself into the shape of the molecule
What is Activation Energy?
The energy in which a substrate must be provided with to complete a chemical reaction
