Listening to acquire information and to understand the message being conveyed by the speaker.
Informational listening
This involves both listening and evaluating the content.
Critical listening
The ability to understand and feel what the other person is feeling or experiencing.
Emphatic Listening
This does not require much attention.
Appreciative listening
Listening to discriminate sounds and other paralinguistic symbols such as pitch, intonation and volume.
Discriminative listening
This is also called as evaluative listening.
Critical listening
This is also called listening for pleasure.
Appreciative listening
The act of appearing to be listening, demonstrated by nodding or giving appropriate reactions.
Pseudolistening
Demonstrated by listeners who only listen to the parts of the message.
Selective listening
This is listening to gather information that will then be used against the speaker.
Ambushing
This is tuning out or avoiding listening to specific topics.
Insulated listening
Is demonstrated by people labeled as conversational narcissists. At times, they show boredom and annoyance.
Stage hogging
listening to information for its literal meaning and disregarding the other person’s feeling and emotions.
Insensitive Listening
listeners rarely pick-up on hidden meanings or subtle nonverbal cues and have difficulty expressing sympathy and empathy.
Insensitive Listening
revolves around a person who can create wrong impressions from simple comments and answers from anyone.
