Q

Network requirements before WDS can be run.

A

Server must be a member or the DC of the domain
Must have an active DHCP server on the network
Must have an active DNS server on the network
The WDS server has an NTFS file system partition to store images.

16
Q

2 types of image formats

A

Sector based image formats

file-based image formats

17
Q

Sector-based image formats

A

each sector is stored within the file and each sector is the smallest unit of information. One common example of a disk image is the .ISO file used for a CD image and a DVD image.

18
Q

file-based image formats

A

each file is the smallest unit. The advantage of using a file-based image is that it is hardware-independent and a file can be referenced multiple times within the file system tree.

19
Q

Advantage of file-based image formats over sector-based image formats

A

By using a database, the system does not have to open and close several individual files during the data transfer.

20
Q

What file format is used by WDS

A

WIM

21
Q

WIM

A

Windows Imaging Format

File format used by WDS

22
Q

Which image format type is WIM

A

file-based

allows a file structure (folders and files) to be stored inside a single WIM database.

23
Q

Image Group

A

folder within the image repository of WDS that shares security options and file resources.

Images inherit their group’s security options and file resources

24
Q

Two components of an image group

A

Res.wim file – contains resources and security options for all images in the group.

.wim file - Each .wim image file in the group

25
Q

Besides using the install images that come on a Windows Installation disk, how do you create an image?

(For example, a customized image?)

A

Windows Deployment Services Capture Utility

26
Q

Windows Deployment Services Capture Utility

A

will create an image file and write it to the computer’s drive, which will eventually be copied to the WDS server. You can then use it to be deployed to other computers.

27
Q

If a PC does not support PXE, how can you set it up to boot to a WDS server?

A

Using a discover image, burned to DVD/CD – boot from that.

28
Q

discover image

A

image file that you can burn to a CD-ROM or other boot medium. When you boot the client computer using the discover image disk, the computer loads Windows PE, connects to a specified WDS server, and proceeds with the operating system installation process.

29
Q

Unlike other components of Server2012, you can’t use ___ to configure WDS

A

PowerShell

30
Q

What command do you use to configure WDS, since there isn’t PowerShell support?

A

wdsutil

31
Q

Answer Files

A

provide responses to the prompts that would normally appear during the Windows installation. Besides clicking the standard Next button used on most screens, the answer file can also be used to partition and format disk, install additional device drivers, and specify what Windows features to install.

32
Q

System Image Manager (SIM)

A

a tool used to create and manage unat- tended Windows setup answer files using a graphical interface. SIM can also be used to check answer files.

33
Q

DISM

A

Deployment Image Servicing and Management
a command-line tool that can be used to service a Windows image or to prepare a Windows PE image. With Dism, you can mount an image offline and then add, remove, update, or list the features, packages, drivers, or international settings stored on that image.
